B1 is the level that unlocks citizenship, many jobs, and university in Germany. Our complete B1 section covers vocabulary, 7 grammar modules, formal writing, and a full mock exam.
Practical vocabulary, phrases, and dialogues for the situations you actually face in Germany.
Learning German for the A1 level is not just about passing a test. For many people moving to Germany, studying there, or applying for a visa or residence permit, A1 German is the first and most important step. But most free resources are scattered: some YouTube videos here, a PDF there, random grammar websites that are hard to follow.
GermanForLife brings everything together in one place. The vocabulary is organised by theme — not alphabetically — because that is how the Goethe A1 exam tests it and how you actually use language in real life. The grammar pages explain rules clearly with examples, not just tables. The tools let you practise actively, not just read passively. And the Germany Journey section covers the German you actually need before and after you arrive — for the Ausländeramt, the doctor, the Bürgerbüro, and more.
GermanForLife is built for anyone who needs to learn German from zero or consolidate their A1 knowledge: immigrants preparing for their first appointments in Germany, students enrolled in language courses who want extra practice, people preparing independently for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or the Start Deutsch 1 examination, and anyone who found Duolingo too gamified or YouTube too scattered for structured learning.
The Goethe-Zertifikat A1, also known as Start Deutsch 1, is an international German language certificate for the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is often required as proof of basic German language ability for family reunion visas, residency applications, and some language course enrollments. The exam has four sections: Lesen (reading), Hören (listening), Schreiben (writing), and Sprechen (speaking).
This website is an independent practice resource and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Goethe-Institut. It helps you prepare for the exam format and build the language skills you need, for free.
The best way to start is to follow the 30-Day Study Plan. It guides you through 20 minutes of practice per day, covering all A1 topics in a logical sequence. Alternatively, you can go directly to the Vocabulary Flashcards to build your word base, or try the Der/Die/Das Trainer to work on one of the trickiest parts of German grammar. All your progress is saved automatically in your browser — no account needed.
