About This Practice Exam

This mock exam follows the structure of the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 / Start Deutsch 1, which has four sections. Lesen (25 minutes) tests your ability to read and understand short German texts, notices, forms, and messages. Hören (20 minutes) tests listening comprehension — this practice tool uses transcripts with fill-in-the-blank exercises as a substitute for audio. Schreiben (20 minutes) requires writing a short message and completing a form. Sprechen (15 minutes) involves self-introduction and responding to topic cards.

The practice exam content on this page is original material created for independent exam preparation. It is not sourced from, affiliated with, or endorsed by the Goethe-Institut or any official examination board.

How to use this mock exam

For the most realistic practice, complete the exam in one sitting with the timers running. Start each section by clicking "Start Timer." Complete reading and listening questions without looking up answers first. For writing, type your own text before clicking "Show Model Answer." For speaking, prepare and say your answer aloud before revealing the sample.

What the score means

The automatic score covers only the reading (Lesen) multiple-choice questions and listening (Hören) fill-in-the-blank answers. Writing and speaking require self-assessment against the model answers. The total A1 pass mark is typically 60% across all sections. Use the results and weak area recommendations to guide your next study session.
