Why Learn Vocabulary by Theme?

The German A1 exam — including the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 and Start Deutsch 1 — tests vocabulary in thematic contexts, not alphabetically. Reading texts are about daily routines, health, or travel. Listening exercises involve shopping, appointments, and family situations. Learning vocabulary by theme means you learn words that appear together naturally, which makes them easier to remember and easier to use.

This flashcard tool groups the 200 A1 vocabulary words into eight themes that directly match the most common A1 exam topics: family, numbers, daily routine, food and drink, travel, health, home, and school. Each card shows the German word with its grammatical article (for nouns), the English translation, and an example sentence to show the word in context.

Tips for memorising German vocabulary

Always learn nouns with their article (der, die, das). Trying to learn the article separately later is much harder. Use the example sentences to anchor each word — grammar in context sticks better than isolated words. Mark words as weak when you get them wrong, and return to weak-word mode regularly. Even 10 minutes of flashcard review per day adds up quickly.

A1 vocabulary themes covered

The eight themes in this flashcard set are: Family (relatives, relationships), Numbers (1–1000, counting, age), Daily Routine (waking up, working, sleeping, time words), Food and Drink (common foods, shopping, ordering), Travel (transport, stations, tickets, delays), Health (symptoms, the doctor, medication), Home (apartment, rent, furniture, repairs), and School and Study (German course, exams, learning).

💡 Exam tip: The Goethe A1 Lesen section often uses short texts with vocabulary from the family, daily routine, and home themes. Mastering these first gives you the quickest reading score improvement.
