What is the German A2 Level?

A2 is the second level of the CEFR. At A2, you can understand sentences and frequently used expressions about areas of immediate relevance — personal information, family, shopping, local geography, employment. You can communicate in simple, routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information. You can describe your background and immediate environment in simple terms.

The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 is required for the German Family Reunion Visa (§30 AufenthG) — making it one of the most practically important language certificates for immigrants. This website is an independent practice resource and is not affiliated with the Goethe-Institut.

What is new at A2 compared to A1?

A2 introduces the most significant grammatical expansions of the early CEFR levels: the Präteritum past tense (and its relationship with Perfekt), subordinate clauses with verb-final word order, the Dativ case, adjective agreement, Konjunktiv II for politeness, reflexive verbs, and comparative/superlative forms. These are not incremental additions — they fundamentally change how you construct sentences.
