Reported speech is how you tell others what someone said without quoting them directly. It appears in B1 reading texts (newspaper articles, summaries) and is tested in writing tasks.
German has two forms of reported speech: using dass + Konjunktiv II (practical, always correct) and using Konjunktiv I (formal, in newspapers). At B1, master the dass approach first. Recognize Konjunktiv I but don't worry about producing it perfectly.

You can drop dass and the reported clause becomes a main clause with Konjunktiv II at position 2:
Newspapers use Konjunktiv I to show they are reporting what someone said, not stating it as fact. The most common forms: sei (sei krank), habe (habe gesagt), werde (werde kommen).
