Connectors & Arguments — Konnektoren

The B1 Schreiben exam requires you to write a structured opinion text. To score well, you must use connecting words beyond "und" and "aber." These advanced connectors are what separate a B1 response from a B2 one.

The 2 connectors that impress examiners most

einerseits … andererseits (on one hand … on the other hand) and sowohl … als auch (both … and). Use these once each in your B1 writing task and you demonstrate clear B1 competence.

Group 4: The Opinion Pair — einerseits … andererseits

EXAM POWER CONNECTOR

Einerseits … andererseits = On one hand … on the other hand

This is the single most useful connector for B1 opinion writing. It shows that you can present multiple perspectives — exactly what the examiner wants to see.

Einerseits ist Homeoffice sehr praktisch, weil man Zeit spart.
Andererseits kann man sich zu Hause schlechter konzentrieren.
On one hand, working from home is very practical because you save time.
On the other hand, it can be harder to concentrate at home.

Group 5: The Comparative — je … desto

STRUCTURE

Je + comparative + subject + verb, desto + comparative + verb + subject

Je mehr ich lerne, desto besser wird mein Deutsch.
The more I learn, the better my German gets.
Je früher man anfängt, desto leichter ist es.
The earlier you start, the easier it is.

B1 Writing Template Using Connectors

Das Thema [TOPIC] ist heute sehr aktuell.

Einerseits hat es den Vorteil, dass [ADVANTAGE]. Außerdem [SECOND POINT].

Andererseits gibt es auch Nachteile. Zum Beispiel [DISADVANTAGE]. Zwar ist das ein Problem, aber [COUNTER-ARGUMENT].

Alles in allem bin ich der Meinung, dass [YOUR OPINION].
