A1 Grammar

Present Tense Verbs

Verbs are the engine of every German sentence. At A1, you need to know how to conjugate regular -en verbs and master the two most important irregular verbs: sein (to be) and haben (to have).

The Golden Rule: German verb endings change with the subject

Unlike English ("I go, you go, he goes"), German verbs change ending for almost every person. Once you know the pattern, it works for hundreds of verbs.

Regular -en Verbs (Regel)

Most German verbs end in -en in the infinitive. Remove the -en, you have the stem. Then add these endings:

PersonEndingmachen (to do/make)lernen (to learn)
ich-emachelerne
du-stmachstlernst
er/sie/es-tmachtlernt
wir-enmachenlernen
ihr-tmachtlernt
sie/Sie-enmachenlernen

💡 The infinitive and wir/sie/Sie forms are always the same! This saves you one form to memorize.

sein (to be) — Most Important Irregular Verb

PersonseinExample
ichbinIch bin Student.
dubistDu bist müde.
er/sie/esistEr ist Arzt.
wirsindWir sind hier.
ihrseidIhr seid spät.
sie/SiesindSie sind fertig.

haben (to have) — Second Most Important

PersonhabenExample
ichhabeIch habe einen Hund.
duhastDu hast Zeit.
er/sie/eshatEr hat Hunger.
wirhabenWir haben eine Wohnung.
ihrhabtIhr habt Glück.
sie/SiehabenSie haben Kinder.
