Germany Journey — Transport

German at the Train Station

The DB (Deutsche Bahn) is essential for life in Germany. But delays, platform changes, and automated announcements can be hard to follow. This guide covers every phrase you need — from buying tickets to surviving a missed connection.

🚂 The DB Reality — Delays Are Normal

"Der Zug hat Verspätung" (The train is delayed) is practically a national phrase. Germany's railway system has significant punctuality issues. ICE trains (high-speed) are often delayed. If you have a connection, build in at least 20–30 minutes. With a Sparpreis ticket, you're entitled to compensation if delayed over 60 minutes — claim via the DB App or Reisezentrum.

Grammar — Dative time expressions

in + Dativ for time duration: in 10 Minuten (in 10 minutes)
um + time: um 14:42 Uhr (at 14:42)
seit + Dativ: seit 20 Minuten (for 20 minutes — ongoing)
ab + time: ab 60 Minuten (from 60 minutes onwards)

Do I need to validate my train ticket in Germany?
For most DB long-distance tickets (ICE, IC), no validation is needed — they're valid for the specific train/date shown. For regional tickets (RE, RB) and S-Bahn tickets bought from machines, you may need to stamp them before boarding at a Entwerter machine. Check your ticket. The DB app automatically validates digital tickets.
What is a Sparpreis ticket?
Sparpreis (saver fare) tickets are the cheapest DB tickets — from €17.90. They're tied to specific trains and not flexible. If you miss your train due to a DB delay, you can take the next train at no extra cost. If you simply decide to change your plan, you pay a change fee or buy a new ticket.
